What is the Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 Sharpening Jig used for?

The Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 Sharpening Jig is designed for sharpening woodturning tools, specifically gouges and chisels. This jig ensures precise angles and consistent edge profiles, making it easier for woodturners to achieve sharp tools for their projects. The adjustable features allow users to customize the grinding angle to suit different tools, enhancing performance and durability. For instance, if you're crafting a delicate bowl or an intricate spindle, having a well-sharpened tool can greatly improve your results.

How does the Vari-Grind 2 differ from the original Vari-Grind?

The Vari-Grind 2 introduces enhanced adjustability and stability compared to its predecessor. It features a wider range of settings, allowing woodturners to fine-tune the sharpening angle for specific tool designs. Additionally, the improved clamping system ensures that tools are held securely during sharpening, reducing the risk of accidents. This upgrade is particularly valuable for users who frequently switch between different tools or require precise angle adjustments for various woodturning techniques.

Can I sharpen different types of tools with the Vari-Grind 2?

Yes, the Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 is versatile and can sharpen a wide range of turning tools. This includes bowl gouges, spindle gouges, and flat chisels. The design accommodates various tool profiles, making it an ideal choice for woodturners who work with multiple tools in their projects. For example, if you’re transitioning from turning a round bowl to a detailed spindle, the ability to quickly adjust your sharpening angle ensures you maintain optimal tool performance for each task.

Is the Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 easy to set up?

Setting up the Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 is straightforward and user-friendly. Most users can attach it to their grinder within minutes, thanks to its simple design. The instructions provide clear steps for adjusting the jig for various angles. After a quick setup, woodturners can efficiently start sharpening their tools, reducing downtime in their crafting process. This means more time spent creating rather than preparing, especially beneficial during busy crafting sessions.

What materials are compatible with the sharpening jig?

The Vari-Grind 2 is designed specifically for sharpening steel tools, which are common in woodturning. It performs exceptionally well on high-speed steel (HSS) tools, which require precise sharpening to maintain their cutting edge. Many woodturners also use it for carbon steel tools, ensuring a sharp, precise edge for their craft. This compatibility enhances its utility since it allows for a broad application across different tool types commonly used in turning.

Does the sharpening jig come with any accessories?

The Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 comes with essential components necessary for operation. While the jig includes necessary mounting hardware, accessories such as grinding wheels are not included, allowing users to choose specific wheels that meet their needs. This gives flexibility to tailor your sharpening setup according to your preferred grinding stones or wheels. Thus, whether you prefer standard wheels or specialized ones for specific tasks, the choice allows for a personalized sharpening experience.

How do I achieve the correct angle when sharpening?

Achieving the correct angle with the Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 is facilitated by its adjustable features. Users can easily set the angle using the jig’s calibrated adjustments to suit the specific tool being sharpened. The accuracy of angle setting is crucial for precision in woodturning. For example, when sharpening a bowl gouge, setting it to the manufacturer's recommended angle will result in optimal performance, allowing for smooth cuts and better control during the turning process.

Can the Vari-Grind 2 be used with my existing grinder?

Yes, the Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 is compatible with most standard bench grinders, making it a versatile addition to your woodturning toolset. However, it’s essential to ensure your grinder has the necessary specifications such as sufficient horsepower and RPM. This compatibility allows woodturners to upgrade their sharpening capabilities without investing in a separate machine. For example, combining the jig with your bench grinder effectively creates a sharpening station that enhances your workshop's efficiency.

What is the weight of the Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2?

The Oneway Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 has a manageable weight that ensures stability during use without making it cumbersome to handle. Its design provides a robust construction that contributes to its durability, ensuring it withstands frequent use in a workshop. This stable performance is particularly beneficial when sharpening larger tools, as it minimizes movement and promotes a more accurate sharpening process. Therefore, you can focus on achieving a fine edge rather than worrying about the jig shifting during use.

Oneway Jig Accessories 3920 Editorial Review

The Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 is a valuable investment for wood turners. It provides a significant improvement in sharpening tools compared to manual methods. However, the instructions that come with the jig are vague and unclear, leading to frustration. The instructional DVD and CD also suffer from poor picture quality and lack of close-ups. Despite these drawbacks, the Wolverine Vari-Grind 2 is still a worthwhile purchase that will last a long time.
