History Editorial Review
The Technics and Civilization Reprint Edition by Lewis Mumford is a thought-provoking and fascinating read, according to most reviews. It is not a scientific history of industrialization but rather an extended opinion piece about how civilization influenced the development of the machine and how the machine influenced civilization. Readers must be willing to self-educate, as they argue the book is challenging to read. Some reviewers find it wordy but agree that Mumford's insights on capitalism and religion are fresh and provocative. Some criticize the University of Chicago Press edition for omitting Mumford's 15 pages of photographs and allowing readers to scramble elsewhere to find them. However, others think that it's not a big deal and that such images can be found on the web. Some reviewers recommend purchasing an earlier version of this work, if possible.
