Baki, Ziya Paşa'nın Harabat'ında ilk yenilikçi olarak nitelendirilir, Muallim Naci'ye göre milletin lisan muallimi, Recaizade'nin şiir terazisinde Osmanlı şuarasının Hafız-ı Şirazi'si, Tanpınar'ın gözünde ise mahir bir şiir işçisidir.
