It does not use the holes in the end of the blade, and it does not tension the blade. It just gives you a way to hold the blade and make a cut that you could not do with a frame. It is better, and safer, than a blade attached to vice grips but the same basic result. It is not a replacement for a full frame hack saw, if the full frame would fit in the allowed space that is the way to go.
