Kitap, Budapeşte'de iki dünya savaşı arasında yaşanan iç içe geçmiş yaşamları anlatıyor. Birinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında yaşadığı sarsıntıyı henüz atlatamamış, dağılmış bir ülke. İkinci Dünya Savaşı öncesi Budapeşte. Hukukçu bir aileden gelen geleceği parlak Yargıç Kömives elindeki boşanma dosyalarını incelerken içlerinden biri dikkatini çeker: Gençliğinden tanıdığı doktor Greiner ve karısının boşanma davasıdır bu. Yargıç, doktorun karısıyla da evlenmeden önce birkaç kez karşılaşmış, aralarında belli belirsiz bir çekim doğduysa da bir ilişkiye dönüşmemiştir.
