- Music Tells Itself Fırat Kutluk We often wonder when we hear music: “What does it tell us?” Especially if there are no words or the words are in a language we do not know. Especially if we listen to Western classical music, following the clues and deciphering them can become a task. What feelings did the composer have, what did he think; What does he want to tell us? Sometimes, without thinking about anything, we may find ourselves caught up in the rhythm or in a shaky state where we adapt to the melody. Even though we don't know what the choir is saying in the last part of Beethoven's 9th symphony, we can get carried away by the flood of enthusiasm. Wherever it is composed in the world, it accompanies the sadness of a folk song or a ballad, misty eyes and a half smile hanging on the lips. So what did we understand? Have we listened to good music; qualified, distinguished? So which is the worst music: rap, arabesque or operetta? Rock music ended at 80’, but are the next ones clumsy? Has the bard tradition disappeared and folk songs have run out? The music of primitive peoples consists of “full tam”, is that why “becomes primitive”, doesn't that music say anything? Fırat Kutluk demonstrates the meaninglessness and uselessness of his authority to classify, rate and hierarchy music with daily and ordinary judgments, with examples from his reflections in daily language. It shows that attempts to make music elite while determining the similarity of judgments from the academy or the street, the artist or the audience, with or without authority, turn into exclusion or denigration of a significant part of the music.
