- Tarihte Türklerden söz edildiğinde, Müslüman halkların ve Hıristiyan Güneydoğu Avrupa'nın geçmişinde oynadığı hatırı sayılır rolden ötürü genellikle Osmanlı İmparatorluğu akla gelir; öyle ki ancak kısmen Türk olan insanlara da bu sıfat yakıştırılırken, Osmanlı olmayan Türkler pek hesaba katılmaz. Osmanlıcılar araştırmalarını, sanki o sırada kendilerini kuşatan dünya içinde çok önemli bir rol oynuyormuş gibi, Osmanlı hanedanının çok mütevazı kökenlerinden başlatırlar ve bu araştırmacıların pek çoğu sanki Osmanlıların civarında daha önemli başka Türkler olmadığına inanırlar. Kuşkusuz bazı bilimciler bu anlayışa tepki göstermeye başlamıştır, ama bunlardan pek azı diğer Türklerin de kendi özgünlükleri olduğunu ve sonunda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'na katılsalar da mutlaka başından itibaren böyle bir eğilim içinde olmadıklarını vurgulamıştır.
